Providing A Reference

Prior to your former employee being rehired, it is likely that you will be called to give a reference. Providing a reference is not required, but failing to meet the request often raises negative connotations for the former employee and for your company. The number one rule in providing references is to be honest and objective. Supply only facts that can be documented and avoid giving your opinion regarding work performance. Care must be taken in order to avoid law suits alleging defamation or invasion of privacy.

TIP: Prior to issuing a reference, get a release in writing from the former employee that gives you permission to release employment-related information.

TIP: Responsibility for employment verification should rest only with the human resources department or a designated person trained in giving public responses.
